Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park
Ampeak Energy is the owner, developer and operator of the Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park. The site has been the home to electricity generation for over 50 years but the way we generate and use electricity is changing and Ampeak Energy and the Uskmouth site is proud to be leading that change. Ampeak Energy is transforming Uskmouth into one of the largest Battery Energy Storage Systems sites in the UK to help support the energy transition to Net Zero while ensuring vital energy security and managing the increase of renewables.
The Uskmouth site
The Uskmouth site is capable of supporting circa 3.5GWh of Battery Storage projects.
The site currently has two battery projects in construction. The first, which Ampeak Energy sold the rights to in 2023, is a 460MWh project with plans to expand to 700MWh.
The second is Ampeak Energy’s flagship AW1 240MWh project. Named after the River Usk in Welsh Afon Wysg - “AW1” is the first of the “AW" projects, with AW2 designed for a total capacity of 1,250 MWh and is being developed with our Joint Venture partners Econrgy. The AW2 project already has planning permissions.
Ampeak Energy are planning on building owning and operating the remainder of projects on the site as an Independent Power Producer. This includes three further projects named after the River Usk in Welsh Afon Wysg - “AW1”, “AW2” and “AW3”.
2025
Ampeak Energy achieves financial close on AW1 Battery Storage Project.
2025
Ampeak Energy and ecology enter joint venture to deliver AW2 project.
2025
AW2 achieves planning permission.
2027
The 240MWh AW1 Battery Storage project is being developed to be online in 2027 with potential for further expansion to 480MWh later in the decade.
2029
The AW2 project is being developed with a grid connection agreement of 2029 and has the potential capacity of up to 1250MWh.
2030s
The largest AW3 project at 1.4GWh is due in the 2030s.
The perfect location
We have a National Grid substation infrastructure located on the site, reducing lead time for grid connection of our projects.
We have railway facilities to bring material for construction and electrical infrastructure onto site.
As a brownfield industrial energy site, local planning authorities are supportive of this type of development at Uskmouth.
We have the expertise of developing, building and operating at the site for over 50 years.
As the cost of batteries continues to reduce, Ampeak Energy has developed the projects to efficiently expand the duration of the batteries from 2 hours to 4 hours , significantly increasing the opportunity.
Battery Storage projects deliver sustainable long-term revenue for our business benefiting our shareholders. It breathes new life into this vital energy hub and community and benefits the planet. Battery Storage projects at this scale are essential for UK Government to achieve Net Zero targets as they balance intermittent renewable generation such as wind and solar with demand.
